In late summer, our Mobile Workshop coordinator, Kelsea Dombrovski, visited Salt Lake City to scout mobile workshop locations for the 2027 National Brownfields Training Conference. Led by Utah DEQ staff Bill Rees, Brent Everett, and Hans Millican, she was able to see dozens of brownfield and redevelopment sites over just two days.

Take a look at just a few of the photos from her visit, and prepare to learn about many of these sites at the 2027 conference, through sessions, mobile workshops, and other engagement opportunities.

In the Ballpark District, we visited a number of new and established redevelopments. One of the projects coming online is Liberty Corner, a new affordable housing development on the site of a former body shop. The new mixed-use development will provide a range of unit sizes and many amenities to residents, including a daycare.

In the Central 9th neighborhood, The Kahlert Youth Media Arts Center (Spy Hop) was on a site that required cleanup of contaminated soil, and now offers mentorship to youth in the media arts so they can find their unique voices and means of expression.

Over in Murray City, a robust Intermountain Health medical center rises into the sky on the site of the historic Murray Smelter, a 142-acre Superfund site of a former lead smelting facility.

The North Temple Landfill, active from 1955-1978, is currently being cleaned up for major industrial and distribution developments. The Utah Inland Port Authority is playing a major role in this redevelopment, which is oriented along multiple key transport corridors.

The massive Mayflower Mine redevelopment near Park City is transitioning 440+ acres from formerly contaminated mine land into a major winter recreation hub, and is the second largest cleanup in Utah history.

The Other Side Village, a life-changing tiny home development for community members formerly experiencing homelessness, was constructed on a former municipal landfill. The Village is a therapeutic democratic community that helps its residents transform their lives.

See you at BF27 this May!
